We are delighted to be hosting a special online event with General H.R. McMaster who formerly served as the US National Security Advisor to US President Donald Trump between 2017 and 2018. In this role, McMaster occupied one of the most senior positions in American federal government and was the 26th person in history to hold it. Unlike his hawkish successor John Bolton, Gen. McMaster was considered to be a voice of reason, referred to as one of “the grownups in the room” of the Trump administration. He strongly advised against the President’s scrapping of the Obama-era Iran deal and was ultimately responsible for the ousting of Steve Bannon, with whom he clashed. He will be discussing “The US, China, and Global Order: The importance of empathy in foreign policy” and some very fascinating topical issues around geopolitics. Brought to you by King’s Business Club, Oxford Guild, Cambridge Guild, LSESU BIG, Imperial Finance Society, Warwick Finance Societies and other leading university societies, the event is 100% FREE and open to all and supported by The Oxford Foundry.
Prior to his experience in the West Wing, McMaster served the US Army as a decorated three-star General, serving in command roles in Iraq and Afghanistan and also partaking in the Gulf War. He was lauded as one of the Army’s primary military strategists, and was referred to by TIME magazine in 2014 as possibly “the 21st Century Army’s pre-eminent warrior-thinker”. He has been awarded 3 Distinguished Service Medals, Silver Star, Legion of Merit and Purple Heart to name a few. He is also an author best known for writing “Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam” which has been hugely influential and widely read in US military circles. It is considered the seminal work on military’s responsibility during Vietnam to confront their civilian bosses when their strategy was not working.
As a foremost global expert on matters of diplomacy, international relations and national security, he currently serves in an academic role at Stanford University and following recent security concerns was appointed to the board of Zoom Video Communications. This will undoubtedly be one of the most unique, fascinating and topical events of the year giving you the chance to hear from and ask questions of such an interesting and high profile guest. We highly recommend you do not miss out so please join us by registering below – we will send those who register the link for the online event.
